John Westenskow
John Westenskow Is a longtime resident of Cache Valley and native of Carbon County. He graduated from CEU (Now USU Eastern) with an Associate in Art and later from USU with a Bachelor of fine Art and Education, both with an emphasis in ceramics.
John was chosen as the Utah Art Education Association’s 2017-2018 recipient of the Middle/Junior High School Educator of the Year Award. His work was also featured at USU Eastern’s Gallery East exhibit in October 2017 and The Artists of Cache Valley Exhibition at the Tippets and Eccles Galleries Chase Fine Art Center at USU. His work is also currently on display at the Bullen Center and the Logan Fine Art Gallery. John has also worked with the USU Art Dept. through a grant to write curriculum for valley secondary art students visiting the past ceramic exhibit Unearthed. In the last 2 years John has also, in conjunction with USU Art Dept., instructed Evening for Educators training for Utah art educators, as well as teaching seniors in Creative Aging classes.
He taught art and ceramics in the Logan City School District for 36 years. Over this time, he also taught various special programs in subjects as varied as physics, reading, literacy, hiking, cross country skiing and magic. The past 4 years John has also been working with the Mount Logan Middle School science department, Trout Unlimited, Cache Anglers and the Utah Dept. of Wildlife Resources. with the “Trout in the Classroom” program raising rainbow trout in the classroom from eggs to fry and releasing them in to local ponds. In 2025 he began coordinating 17 of these specialized aquariums in schools across northern Utah for the program.
Over two decades of summer breaks were spent as an itinerant airbrush artist, setting up shop across Utah and on the Oregon coast. Pottery and a return to teaching, however, was ever-present and the last few years has returned comfortably and securely to the forefront.
Recently John worked and taught at the Cache Valley Pottery Studio in Providence as resident artist, senior educator and consultant. John’s work can be seen and at the Artist’s Gallery at the Bulllen Center, at Needham’s Logan Fine Art Gallery and various art and craft shows around the state. John was also recently honored to be included in the notable publication Dictionary of Utah Fine Artists along with outstanding Utah artists, past and present.
