I have had a life-long love of the arts, visual and performing. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, my youth was blessed with trips to the Nelson Atkins Gallery, drinking in the works of old masters and contemporary artists. Art materials in school and at home were precious “toys” for me.  Any margins, phonebooks, or paper next to the phone didn’t stand a chance of remaining doodle-free.

Following college, I moved to Casper, Wyoming to teach at the Wyoming School for the Deaf. One of my favorite parts of teaching was creating multi-media presentations for the classroom. I sought out galleries and events, being moved and delighted in many ways. Settled now in Logan, Utah, all walls, doors, and floors are fair game for my artistic expression.

I began my study of painting in 1981 after moving to Logan, Utah. I studied with local artists, Kent Wallis and California artist, Rom Villa, and a drawing class at USU with Chris Warnick. Following that, I took a summer workshop in printmaking with Adrian Van Suchtelen. Most of my art career was spent in northern Utah studying and promoting others’ work as well as my own, both through the Alliance for the Arts and, also, at Greystone Gallery, which I co-owned for 18 years with glass artist, Shean Jezak. I spent much of the following twenty years exploring surface design, fiber art, and photography. I pursued these as a hobby while I worked for the Cache Chamber of Commerce and then as Director of the Cache Business Resource Center, where I helped others start their own businesses, along with economic development work for local and regional businesses and procurement of government contracts.  Both the art world and helping others in business have been my passions.

Since retiring, I returned to painting with oils, using mostly palette knives. I work in pastels, too. I have been actively participating the past eight years in both local and regional gallery exhibits as well as other community art activities. I realized how hungry I was to paint again.

I am drawn into the landscapes before me in this beautiful valley with its ongoing dance of light and movement. My daily drives to and from work, prior to retiring, or my visits to my children and friends provided and continue to provide challenges for me to keep my eyes on the road. Every excursion gives me a new perspective on the very familiar scenes before me. I am a lucky lady!

This has been a time of exploration for me. I have used the time to study light, form, and narrative in several genres. I have taken workshops and mentorships with several national and international artists. I have always been drawn to representational work and have expanded into non-representational. I, also, been exploring the figure—both within the landscape and as portraiture. I love to see the gesture of the form and the narrative of the moment.

I enjoy finding abstraction in my paintings. I am intrigued by the patterns of the landscape and the mood it invokes. I, also, enjoy reacting to the marks that I lay down, rotating my canvas and responding to what I see. I enjoy making large movement with the palette knife, painting from my shoulder, as well as using various knives, tools found in the hardware stores or in my collection of found objects that create interesting marks and texture. I enjoy working on both small and large substrates. I enjoy every medium that I try. I love being drawn into the process of creation.
